Our founder, Josie Van Schoick, recognized the need for a can washing program in 2009 when communities in the East Bay and San Francisco began mandating composting of food scraps to produce green energy and garden compost. As a controller at a refuse collection and recycling company, she saw firsthand the impact that this new regulation would have on waste collection cans. She realized that the trend towards composting would lead to unbagged food waste being deposited directly into garbage cans, resulting in messy, smelly containers that needed regular cleaning.
